Apprenticeships are a great opportunity to learn the knowledge and skills required to work within the NHS at the same time as earning a wage. Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust has employed apprentices in a wide range of roles, both clinical and non-clinical, since 2011, with a significant number progressing to permanent positions within the organisation.
An apprentice may be a newly recruited member of staff, or an existing member of staff undertaking an apprenticeship programme to further develop in their chosen career.
Watch the Choose an Apprenticeship video, produced by the National Skills Academy for Health, to learn more about why you should choose an apprenticeship in the NHS.
What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a job with an accompanying skills development programme. Through their apprenticeship, apprentices will gain the technical knowledge, practical experience and wider skills they need for their immediate job and future career. The apprentice gains this through a wide mix of learning in the workplace, formal off-the-job training and the opportunity to practise these new skills in a real work environment – all while being employed and earning a wage as you learn.
Who are our apprenticeships for?
Apprenticeships are for everyone. There are often myths about apprenticeships being for individuals who are school leavers, but this is just that, a myth. Apprenticeships can be undertaken by anyone, and we offer training at all levels and in a variety of sectors across PHU, including business and administration, finance, nursing, laboratory science and much more.
How do I apply for an apprenticeship?
If you don’t currently work for Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, then you can apply for available apprenticeship positions by visiting our smartrecruiters website. All our apprenticeship roles will include ‘apprentice’ within the role title.
